Read any good books lately?

I am famous for buying books but seem to always have trouble finding time to read anything that is not related to research. A book that I am about half way through is The Future of Education [details to follow - I promise :0)]

How about you? Try posting a comment to this post to share what you've been reading of late.

  1. I am the same way! I have been trying to finish The Scientist in the Crib, which is about child development.

  2. I just finished In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan and would highly recommend it. It really puts things in perspective.

  3. Memoirs of A Geisha is the last book for enjoyment I read. Saw the movie years back and loved the cinematography. The book was even more moving...not surprisingly so, of course books always are better than their movies:).

  4. I'm working my way through Calculus the Easy Way and have recently read Nancy Clark's Food Guide for Marathoners. I read Water for Elephants a few years ago and loved it! I believe they are making it into a movie, but I'm not sure if I'll see it.

  5. Recently finding time for "recreational reading" has been difficult! It has taken me since March to almost get through The Explosive Child by Dr. Ross Green, and it's a super easy read that would normally take me a few days... it's all about Collaborative Problem Solving with children; very interesting and thought provoking! Anyone who is going to work with kids or is a parent of a "difficult child" should definitely read this one!

  6. I personally like to start books and not finish them unless they are really exciting or good or I have to read them for an assignment... Not a good habit, but maybe someday I'll finish all the one's I've started. The book I'm reading right now that stands the greatest chance of being finished is called Baby Catcher and it's about this midwife who used to be a nurse and each chapter is a birth story. Even her own is in there. It's interesting and it helps me feel a bit more ready, but in a fun way, not a "how to give birth" way... I bet you guys would have never guessed I was reading a book about that, would ya?!

  7. Well, if you guys hadn't guessed by now, I am a book addict. I always have books I am reading all over the house. Last term I read some of "The Courage to Teach" by Parker Palmer but couldn't get into it.I think I may go back to it once I am actually teaching. I read some of Eleanor Duckworth's "The Having of Wonderful Ideas...", very engrossing but I had to give it back to Richard and haven't checked it out again. I also read "A Different Kind of Teacher" by John Taylor Gatto, some of "Deschooling Our Lives" by various authors. These books and other things I have been observing and reading during these courses have convinced me that the school system we have is seriously lacking in the ability to ensure the best education of all of our children. I hope I can make a difference in my classrooms.
I picked up a book my daughter brought from school on Friday and finished it yesterday. It's called "Stargirl" by Spinelli. A very good story about a homeschooled girl who started public school as a sophomore. She was a very free spirit, unconcerned about what the rest of the students thought about how she acted or dressed. It is told from the point of view of a junior boy who eventually becomes her boyfriend for a while. A bitter sweet story about how difficult it is to be different in a society that demands conformity most of the time and how, nonetheless, those differences bring so much color and interesting diversity to our lives.

  8. I'm reading Pride and Prejudice again. I love to re-read books again and again. I just finished reading Wicked and loved it! Before that I read the Twilight saga (of course!), I have to say I like the books better than I like the movies.

  10. I keep trying to read Wuthering Heights but can never get past the first few pages. Other than that I have recently read Eclispe and The Glass Castle. I try to keep reading books for fun but sometimes life gets a little too busy!

  11. I don't have much time to read for fun honestly. I have read some great books over time like Night by Weisel. Reading just puts me to sleep :)

  12. Haven't found the time for a fun read lately, but when I do read, it tends to be children's books. I particularly like the fantasy genre. The last book I remember was Phillip Pullman's, The Golden Compass. Loved the first in the series, second was disappointing.

  13. Jan if you like fantasy you would love the series I am reading with my kid: Fablehaven. We are reading the foruth book now. The general theme of the books is that there are secret preserves fro magical creatures and they are in constant danger.

Some other books we have read recently are Tentacles, Cryptid Hunters and Elephant Run... all by Roland Smith. These are all great.

Now for just me. Well I love reading, but I hesitate to pick up anything that I can't easily put down at a moments notice and come back to later. Once I start a good book I tend to want to read it every minute I can, start to finish. So, as I told you all before, I read a lot of ccokbooks. I recently subscribed to a magazine,Vegetarian Times, and I am currently enjoying reading through the most recent issues.

  15. I usually have to wait until summer to read anything fun, but I have started reading The Golden Compass, and I really like it.

  16. Oh gosh the last book I read for leisure was The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson, which is a nostalgic kind of outlook on what it was like growing up in the 1950's.

  17. I'm currently reading "My upmost for His highest." Its a daily devotional, very good book written by Oswald Chambers.

  18. Aside from the normal set of books that I use for keeping up with my subject matter, I am reading the text books for class and "His-Panic" by Geraldo Rivera, which discusses the fears that people in the United States have concerning Latino immigration issues etc.
